Rodney Carmichael. Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap is out now. A decade in the waiting, Nipsey Hussle’s Victory Lap is more than an anticipated major-label debut — it’s a testament to the independent grind he employed to cultivate a dedicated fanbase. Nipsey didn’t buy it. But it takes more than an innate business ethic to make great music. And on Victory Lap , the first release from his multi-album deal with Atlantic Records, he opens the vault to reveal of fresh stockpile of thug motivation. A long-time member of L. When I talked to him for the exclusive breakdown of his album with NPR Music, Nipsey was still feeling the heat from social media after an Instagram post of him praising a positive image of young black boys was widely condemned for simultaneously expressing homophobic sentiments.

He declined to speak on it directly, saying he preferred to let the music speak for itself. In a sense, it does. Nipsey’s hustle speaks to those who often develop a paranoid sense of hypermasculinity in order to survive environments where their own identity is a primary target. That’s certainly no defense, but perhaps some missing context. When they hear the music, they’ll hear what I believe in and what I choose to promote. And I think that’s the most important thing. If you check the stats — the murder rates and incarceration rates in the years I was a teenager in L. None of my peers avoided prison. None of ’em.

Detroit has been a breeding ground for some of the most influential artists in Hip-hop history. From the groundbreaking production and heavy sample-based style of producer and rapper J Dilla, to the immense success of rappers like Big Sean and Eminem. For many, the sounds of these artists did not represent the actual struggles of what was occurring within the city itself. Detroit filed for bankruptcy in and with the city already heavily segregated , its Black residents found themselves at the intersection of a system meant to keep them poor and hungry. With that struggle breeds hustle and a way to survive by any means necessary. Whether that means trapping, scamming, or in this case, rapping. Unlike the artists I mentioned previously, this new breed of Detroit artists speak directly to the people around them, and their own personal experiences of living in the city — or trying to make it out. Remaining true to the signature Detroit sound of both a deep and bouncy base, these artists still make room for plenty of stylistic differences. Detroit is putting its foot down, earning respect from a sea of booming rap scenes, such as the Bay Area and L. It also makes you think about why in the world someone would want to make this man do the things he says in his music, making every diss and jab feel that much more intriguing. What Sada says is far too detailed, and the people that have wronged him for sure know which diss is directed at them.

As he was bearing witness to the wars between friends in the Bloods and Crips, he had to praise the Lord by wearing a suit, cutting his hair and smiling. I came from it just being in this city. He had other things to worry about, like a career swerving between lanes and two kids to support. All that praise came from Rich inking a deal with Cash Money Records , the rap label founded in that has represented artists including Lil Wayne, Drake and Nicki Minaj. All the while, he was slowing down as a writer and performer. After meeting his contractual obligations to Cash Money, Rich went to Birdman to see if he could cut ties with the label. Go do it. Just as things were looking up, in May he came back to Colorado for a weekend and was busted for drunk driving.
