You don’t need to have firefighting or other emergency response skills to apply — all the necessary training is provided. There is a diverse range of roles available to firefighters, with great opportunities for specialisation and career progression. To become a Victorian firefighter, successful candidates must complete 20 weeks of intensive training as part of the Victorian Career Firefighter Course, at the Victorian Emergency Management Training Centre in Craigieburn. Upon completion of this course firefighters will continue training on station for 3 years to become a qualified firefighter.
Education Requirements
Once qualified, there are a range of opportunities for career progression and take on more responsibilities at an incident, on station and beyond. Probationary period: A probationary period applies, commencing from the beginning of the Victorian Recruit Firefighter Course. Annual leave: Firefighters receive nine weeks rostered annual leave per year. This annual leave is taken in two blocks per year, and is rostered according to the shift and location to which you are based. Public holidays: Firefighters are rostered to work throughout the year, including public holidays. This is a defined-benefit superannuation fund to which you contribute according to the rate you nominate on your superannuation form. To be eligible for consideration for appointment as a Victorian firefighter, applicants must be of good character and will be assessed according to criminal, driving and other probity checks. The prior history of all applicants is considered holistically and on a case-by-case basis. If an applicant is uncertain about their eligibility, they can submit a Voluntary Disclosure form before they apply, outlining the information they would like clarified.
